Things to consider when designing your website

Looking at getting a new website designed? Have an existing website which needs an update? Great! But where do you start?

Purpose

Having a clear goal as to what you want your website to do is key to your website's success. Do you want your website to inform people about a service/product/event? Do you want to direct your customers to make a purchase? Fill in a form? Call you? Weirdly, having that end point set in your mind, makes starting the project much easier.

Site Map

How many pages do you need to inform the customer enough about your product or service, so that they convert to your end point (above)? Depending on the nature of your business and the services you offer, you might be able to compact all of your business information into a neat 1 page Starter Plan website package. Or your business might need pages and pages of information and products which you want your customers to see. In which case you would need to look at our Professional Plan with unlimited dynamic pages.

Branding

Does your business have clear branding, such as a strong logo design, brand colour palette and set brand fonts? If not, branding is something we can help with here at Lollipop Rocks. We offer a logo design service from £100.

Content

What content do you want to include on your website? Do you have some great images of your products or services you want to include? Have you thought about the copy on your website? How are you going to sell your product or service over your competitors? Check out our handy hints and tips for copy writing guide.

User Experience

Think about your customer journey, how are you going to direct your customer across your website to get them to that all important conversion end point? Do you need to direct customers towards a shop or an enquiry form? Do you need to drive them to further information pages? How many clicks to they need to go through before converting? Can you reduce this to decrease customer drop off? It's really useful to test out your website as a customer and see the journey from their perspective. You can then see the areas where they might disengage, and take steps to prevent this.

Design

What do you want your website to look like? Do you want it to be clean and minimalistic? Bright and quirky?

Corporate and professional? Choose a colour palette which works with your brand. Different colour combinations can really give an instant impression as to the type of business you are. Have a think about how you want your business to look and feel. Carefully select your typography to represent your brand. Using font combinations which compliment each other can really lift the design of your website pages.

Imagery

Using strong photography or graphics across your website design will really help you stand out from the crowd. Although stock photography is useful to bulk out your content, having images of your own work or products, will ensure your website is completely unique. If you have a great eye for photography, you can create your own little photo shoot to take some great shots of your business or the work that you do. It might be worthwhile looking at having a professional photography shoot done to get the imagery for your website. That way all the images will look uniform on the website and give your brand a real edge. Some photographers will do short social media or website shoots for you, for just a couple of hours.

Marketing Strategy

Phew, so you've got your website sorted, but what's next? How do you get customers to it? Time to sort out a serious marketing plan. Do you want to use social media to advertise your website? Will posting on Facebook and Instagram be enough to increase your customer base? Do want to put some spend behind social media ads? Do you want to set up a Google Adwords campaign to reach new customers? Do you want to look at advertising in local magazines? Or advertise on affiliate websites? There's lots of different ways to market your business, and it takes time to find the right avenue that works for your business. But try a few different ones and see which one gives you the most success.
