Logo Design For Small Businesses

Logo design. What makes a good brand logo?

There are lots of options for designing logos - from doing it yourself, to using a logo builder, or getting a designer to design one for you.

So how do you decide which option is best for your business?

There are a few things to consider when thinking about your logo design:

Where will you use your company logo?
Will it be solely on your website? On company stationery, product labelling, transport, signage, online advertising, offline advertising? Where you intend to use your business logo design is important to know what type of file format you need to produce your logo in. And it is important to decide what style of logo design will work well across all these areas.

What is your brand style?
Your logo design should reflect the ideals of your brand. For some brands a bold statement-making typographical logo is perfect to portray their brand ethos. For other brands, illustration and and a more intricate design gives the brand the identity it needs. Whatever design you decide your logo needs to be, it is important to consider the brand as a whole and make sure all design elements work together to produce one cohesive branding experience.

What does your logo design need to say?
Time to think about what your company name says about your business. Some business names say in the title exactly what the company does. But others need a little strap-line to explain the service or product being provided. If you fall into the latter category, it is a good idea to think about a short snappy strapping which describes your business. Having a strap-line with your logo isn't necessarily in all circumstances but really useful if your logo is being used in a situation where it is not immediately clear what the service or product you are providing is. For example you wouldn't necessarily need it on your website because your website is explaining your service to the consumer. But you might want to use it on a business cards where no other business service information is given.

Should I use a logo builder?
Logo builders are definitely a good idea for some small businesses, but most brands would benefit from a professional designer creating their logo for them. Logo designers take into account the broad range of ways a logo needs to be used, from small areas of mobile marketing to large billboard ads. Creating a logo which can work across a breadth of media does require an experienced eye. However not all businesses need that level of logo design. Also handy to bear in mind the type of file you receive from your logo builder. It is always a good idea to have eps or svg files for logos because they are scalable. Jpg images can only be made smaller, they cannot be enlarged without pixelating. The level of logo design you need depends on the needs of your business.
